Our Methodology

How we research, score and rank products to find the five worth buying.

In Short

For every category we build a long list, research each product from several independent angles, score it against criteria that matter for that category, and publish only the top five, along with the scores.

1. Choosing What to Evaluate

Before anything is ranked, we decide which products deserve a look:

  • Market scan: established brands, popular newcomers and products readers ask us about.
  • Real demand: what people are actually searching for and buying.
  • Price spread: options from budget to premium so every reader has a fit.
  • Availability: products you can actually buy today.

A typical category starts with 15 to 30 candidates before it is narrowed to five.

3. Scoring Criteria

Each category has its own criteria, but most rankings weigh some combination of:

  • Performance: how well it does its main job.
  • Build quality: materials, finish and durability.
  • Features: useful extras that improve everyday use.
  • Value: what you get for the price.
  • Ease of use: setup, controls and day-to-day experience.
  • Reliability: consistency over months, not just days.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 10. Weights change by category; battery life matters more for headphones than for an ice maker.

4. How the Ranking Is Calculated

  1. Every product is scored on each criterion.
  2. Scores are weighted by how much that criterion matters in the category.
  3. The weighted scores are combined into one overall score.
  4. Products are ordered from highest to lowest.
  5. The top five are published.

When two products are nearly tied, we look at warranty, brand support and long-term owner reports to break the tie.

6. Keeping Rankings Fresh

  • Scheduled reviews: every category is revisited regularly.
  • Price tracking: value scores are updated when prices move.
  • Reliability watch: new owner complaints can move a product down.
  • New launches: major releases are evaluated for a spot in the top five.

7. Editorial Independence

  • We never accept payment for a ranking or a better position.
  • Commission rates have no effect on scores.
  • If a product does not meet our bar, it does not make the list, whoever sells it.

8. Limitations

  • “Best” depends on you: our ranking is a strong starting point, not a substitute for your own needs.
  • Regional differences: prices and availability vary by country.
  • Fast-moving markets: a brand-new release may appear before we can test it.
  • Unit variation: individual products can differ from the ones reviewed.
